Indian rice traders hike prices to mirror higher export duty

Published

This article about rice exports from India. In August 2023, the Indian government imposed a 20% export duty on parboiled rice to control domestic rice prices. This caused Indian rice export prices to increase. In addition, the customs department demanded that Indian rice exporters pay duty differentials on rice exported in the last 18 months, which could further cripple rice shipments from India.

The article also mentions rice export prices from other countries. Thailand’s 5% broken rice prices were quoted at $585-$590 per ton, down from last week’s $598. Vietnam’s 5% broken rice was offered at $590-$595 per metric ton, unchanged from a week ago. Prices are expected to soften due to a weakening baht and demand.
