AP’s aquaculture reels under US tariffs

Published

The aquaculture industry in Andhra Pradesh, which provides livelihoods for thousands, is facing a major setback due to increased import tariffs imposed by the US on seafood. This has severely impacted the state’s aquaculture hubs, with Eluru district being the hardest hit.

The aquaculture ecosystem in Andhra Pradesh spans over 572,065 acres across several districts, including Eluru, West Godavari, Krishna, and others, with 204,031 aqua ponds and a workforce of 264,000 people. Eluru district alone has a total aquaculture area of 165,778.80 acres, with 26,882 aqua ponds and 12,588 shrimp culture farmers.

The new US tariffs have disrupted market dynamics, significantly affected profitability, and threatened the income and stability of farmers. The crisis extends beyond Eluru, affecting aquaculture across other districts in Andhra Pradesh. Key species cultivated in the region include Vannamei and P. monodon shrimps in both brackish and freshwater areas.
