Soymeal Exports to US Dip 90% in 5 Yrs

Published

Indian soymeal exports to the US have fallen by over 90% in the last five years due to a 2021-22 anti-dumping investigation by the US International Trade Commission (ITC). The investigation was initiated by the Organic Soybean Processors of America (OSPA), who claimed that organic soymeal from India was being sold in the US at less than fair value (LTFV) and that the Indian government was providing “unfair subsidies” to its producers. Only one exporter participated in the preliminary investigation, leading to the imposition of heavy anti-dumping and countervailing duties. The company that participated received a much lower duty, making it unviable for other exporters to continue shipping to the US.

India’s soymeal exports to the US peaked in 2020-21 at 2.27 lakh tonnes. After the duties were imposed, shipments plummeted to 21,313 tonnes in 2024-25. The soymeal was used as non-GM chicken feed in the US because 95% of the US’s soybean crop is genetically modified (GM). In 2020-21, the US was India’s fourth-largest soymeal market.
