Development of the Vizhinjam International Seaport

Published

The second phase of the Vizhinjam International Seaport’s development is scheduled to begin in mid-January 2026, involving an investment of ₹9,700 crore by Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt Ltd (AVPPL). This expansion will increase the existing berth from 800 meters to 2,000 meters and extend the breakwater by another 920 meters. Since starting commercial operations in late 2024, the port has already handled over 13.25 lakh TEUs from 636 ships.

Vizhinjam has achieved a milestone as the first Indian port to handle more than 40 ultra-large container ships with lengths of 399 meters. Its deep-water capabilities have attracted over 45 ships with drafts exceeding 16 meters. The port’s contribution to the public exchequer through taxes has reached approximately ₹97 crore during this initial operational period.

Future plans for the port area include developing a yard, security apparatus, and dedicated customs and police aid posts on 50 hectares of acquired land. Connectivity is also being prioritized with an underground rail link to the Balaramapuram station and a new approach road from NH-66. Additionally, the state government is in discussions to establish cruise tourism infrastructure at the port to diversify its operations.
