Cochin Shipyard has made history by securing orders for six 1700-TEU LNG-powered containerships, marking the first time the CMA CGM Group has placed such orders with an Indian entity. These vessels, costing approximately $60 million each, represent a shift away from traditional Chinese and Korean shipyards toward Indian manufacturing excellence. This deal has propelled Cochin Shipyard’s unexecuted order book to a record ₹23,000 crore, showcasing the growing global confidence in Indian engineering. Furthermore, the partnership includes plans to expand into container manufacturing and ship recycling within India. This strategy is perfectly synchronized with the Prime Minister’s Maritime Vision 2047, focusing on green energy and self-reliance in the shipping sector.
