India’s internal logistics sector is witnessing a massive shift as cargo transport through National Waterways reached a record 145.84 million metric tonnes (MMT). Passenger traffic has also surged nearly 6-fold, reaching 7.6 crore. To support this growth, the Union Budget 2026-27 has greenlit the operationalization of 20 new National Waterways and a dedicated ship repair ecosystem in Varanasi and Patna. Efficiency at major ports has significantly improved, with container vessel turnaround times dropping to 28.5 hours, supporting the “Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision” to handle 500 MMT of cargo by 2047.
