The Government of India has constituted a high-level committee of senior officials to actively address severe container backlog issues across all 12 major ports, focusing heavily on the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Mumbai, where inbound cargo accumulation has reached nearly 35,000 to 40,000 containers. Reviewed in a joint meeting chaired by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the panel will meet on a weekly or fortnightly basis to systematically resolve bottlenecks driven by acute shortages of lorry drivers and the sudden rerouting of West Asia-bound transit cargo to Indian shores. By streamlining logistics coordination, improving regional container availability, and speeding up cargo evacuation protocols at key inland freight hubs, the dedicated committee aims to lower domestic logistics costs, remove prolonged customs delays, and optimize multi-modal trade flow efficiency across the national maritime network.
