Strategic Shipping Resumes in Strait of Hormuz Following US-Iran Ceasefire Deal

Published

Three India-bound supertankers, the Desh Vibhor, Desh Vaibhav, and Sanmar Herald, carrying nearly 6 million barrels of Iraqi and Kuwaiti oil, successfully re-emerged in the Gulf of Oman, signaling an uptick in bi-directional transits through the critical Strait of Hormuz. This follows a 60-day temporary ceasefire memorandum between the US and Iran, where the US officially ended its blockade of Iranian ports while Tehran eased vessel restrictions. Prior to this, 13 Indian-flagged ships and 16 fertilizer cargo ships were gridlocked in the waterway. With regional security stabilizing, New Delhi and Tehran are preparing to resume dialogue to expand the strategic Chabahar Port, planning an eventual capacity scaling from 100,000 TEUs to 500,000 TEUs via the International North-South Transport Corridor.
