India’s proposed Port and Mega Shipbuilding Cluster at Dugarajapatnam in Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh, is accelerating as Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited has expressed strong interest in becoming an anchor investor. This ambitious ₹29,253 crore project is structured as a 50:50 joint venture between the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) and the AP Maritime Board (APMB), covering an expansive area of 2,000 acres. The Andhra Pradesh state government is securing its equity by acquiring 2,170 acres of land across Tirupati and Nellore districts, backed by a sanctioned budget of ₹543.3 crore. Initially designed to handle a cargo capacity of 7.8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), with provisions to scale up to 20 MTPA, the facility will feature an annual shipbuilding capacity of 1.2 million gross tonnes (GT). Moving forward through the Special Purpose Vehicle “National Shipbuilding & Heavy Industries Park AP Limited,” the development is projected to transform South India’s maritime landscape by generating 5,000 direct and 30,000 indirect jobs.
