The Indian government’s comprehensive ₹170,000-crore shipbuilding policy package is driving a major surge in global commercial orders and international investment across domestic shipyards. Shipping Secretary Vijay Kumar revealed that the strategic policy, built upon shipyard capacity expansion, financial assistance schemes, and the Maritime Development Fund, has aggregated demand for roughly 437 vessels globally. Reflecting this enhanced international competitiveness, state-run Cochin Shipyard Ltd secured a landmark commercial export contract from French shipping giant CMA CGM for six feeder container vessels. In the private domain, Swan Defence and Heavy Industries secured orders for chemical tankers and Kamsarmax bulk carriers from European entities, while Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders secured a ₹1,330 crore green-technology contract for a methanol dual-fuel platform supply vessel from the Shipping Corporation of India.
