India’s broader trade negotiations are experiencing distinct shifts as policymakers balance international pressures against domestic economic priorities. To ensure speedier execution, India is prioritizing country-specific bilateral FTA tracks with Qatar and Bahrain over slower bloc negotiations with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). However, the India-US trade framework signed in February faces a severe impasse following a US Supreme Court ruling that disrupted reciprocal tariff assumptions. Negotiators returned empty-handed as India remained firm on safeguarding strict red lines, refusing to lower tariffs on American dairy and agricultural items due to cultural factors and rural livelihood protections, while continuing to increase its strategic purchases of Russian crude oil despite continuous diplomatic pressure from Washington.
