Diverging Strategies and the Historic Shift in Global Shipping Rankings

Published

French ocean carrier CMA CGM is officially on track to overtake its Danish rival, Maersk, as the world’s second-largest container line by the summer of 2027. According to recent maritime intelligence data from Linerlytica and Alphaliner, the capacity gap between the two major liners has shrunk to a few hundred thousand slots, with MSC maintaining a commanding first-place lead. This major hierarchy shift is driven by completely opposite corporate strategies; while CMA CGM has aggressively reinvested its pandemic-era windfalls into a massive orderbook of over 200 new mega-vessels (including 24,000 TEU LNG-powered giants), Maersk has intentionally executed a highly disciplined fleet strategy. The Danish company has explicitly chosen to focus its capital on transforming into an integrated logistics provider rather than chasing pure slot capacity. While analysts warn that total capacity rankings do not automatically translate to profitability or schedule reliability during cyclical market downturns, CMA CGM’s rapid expansion marks a monumental milestone for the family-controlled French group, shifting the balance of power within the global maritime supply chain.
