Transforming Cold Chain Telematics: Maersk Deploys Next-Generation IoT Devices Fleetwide

Published

A.P. Moller-Maersk has commenced an aggressive fleetwide rollout of its next-generation Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity devices across its entire inventory of refrigerated containers (reefers) to secure a continuous, highly reliable data flow for global cold chain customers. This major multi-year technological upgrade, which has already been installed on approximately 30% of the reefer fleet, aims to systematically replace older, fragmented hardware generations with a standardized digital platform. These advanced telematics devices feature significantly increased processing power, support high-speed 4G and 5G cellular connectivity alongside backwards-compatible 2G/3G networks, and feature integrated solar panels for self-sustaining, always-on operations during long-haul maritime transport. Intended to build upon Maersk’s existing “Captain Peter” cargo visibility platform, this hardware modernization goes hand in hand with the carrier’s recent rollout of a unified digital platform across 450 active container vessels. By establishing this ultra-stable data pipeline, Maersk plans to pivot its tracking offering away from basic transit visibility toward an intelligent, predictive analytics tool capable of interpreting environmental exceptions in real time, preventing cargo spoilage, and delivering automated, actionable recommendations directly to pharmaceutical and perishable goods exporters.
