Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Australia for the Annual Leaders’ Summit from July 8 to 10, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese lauded the comprehensive strategic partnership for delivering profound trade, security, and technological benefits. The crown jewel of the upcoming bilateral discussions in Melbourne is expected to be a major uranium supply pact, leveraging Australia’s possession of one-third of the world’s known uranium reserves to fuel India’s domestic nuclear power expansion. The leaders are also set to firm up cooperative agreements spanning critical minerals, clean energy, supply chain resilience, and cybersecurity. Economic integration has accelerated dramatically following the implementation of the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), which helped push bilateral trade to $54.4 billion in FY25 by granting immediate zero-duty access to 98.3% of Australian goods and locking in 100% duty-free access for Indian exports like textiles, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural items.
