Strategic Import Reform and Free Trade Operational Rules

Published

The Indian government has exempted essential machinery and component inputs for electronics, EV batteries, and medical equipment from customs duties (7.5%–15%) until March 2029 to boost global competitiveness and integrate into global value chains. Parallelly, the Ministry of Commerce notified the official Rules of Origin for the India-UK Free Trade Agreement starting July 15. These rules give exporters flexibility through self-certification while establishing strict Qualifying Value Content (QVC) metrics (35%–45%) and requiring five-year record-keeping to prevent duty exposure during post-import verification.
