Bangladesh’s Empty Container Build-Up Puts Pressure on Regional Trade

Published

Bangladesh is facing a growing logistics challenge as empty containers continue to accumulate at Chattogram Port, driven by a widening gap between imports and exports. The shortage of storage space at ports and inland container depots is slowing cargo movement, delaying export operations, and increasing logistics costs across the supply chain. To ease congestion, the Chattogram Port Authority has proposed allowing shipping lines to store empty containers at non-bonded locations, while industry experts are also calling for faster container repositioning, improved coordination among logistics stakeholders, and stronger export growth. As Chattogram remains an important gateway for regional trade, the situation could impact India–Bangladesh cargo flows, making efficient container management and cross-border logistics coordination increasingly important for maintaining smooth trade operations.
