Strategic FTAs and Global Tariff Dynamics Expand India’s $60 Trillion Market Access

Published

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized that India’s ongoing Free Trade Agreement (FTA) strategy is providing domestic businesses access to $60 trillion in global markets while safeguarding sensitive domestic sectors like dairy and agriculture. India’s merchandise exports grew 15% in Q1 FY27, with ongoing negotiations for FTAs with the EU, UK, and Oman nearing key milestones. Meanwhile, bilateral trade discussions with the United States face complexity under Section 301 investigations and proposed reciprocal tariffs, with India seeking tariff parity and fair market access against competing South Asian and ASEAN exporters. On a parallel track, the India-New Zealand FTA successfully eliminated a 30% tariff on sheep meat and 2.75% tariff on wool, unlocking new opportunities for agricultural trade.
