India Defends US Trade Volume, Receives WTO Praise, and Unveils Major Port Expansion

Published

At the WTO Trade Policy Review, global members acknowledged India’s economic resilience, structural reforms, and digital infrastructure expansion. Trade statistics revealed that despite heavy US tariffs that reached up to 50% before settling at 10%, India’s export share to the United States remained resilient at around 20%, generating strong demand for electronics, engineering products, and textiles. To expand maritime handling capabilities, the Chennai Port Authority cleared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a massive ₹17,700 crore Outer Harbour Project. Executed under a hybrid EPC and BOT model with 40% public funding, the project features an 18-meter draft capacity to accommodate 24,000 TEU ultra-large container ships and capture vital feeder traffic along the eastern coast.
