Zero-Duty Import Plans Boost Trade & Address Domestic Supply Gaps

Published

To curb surging domestic sugar prices that touched a 16-year high of ₹5,530 per quintal, the Indian government permitted the import of 1 million metric tonnes of raw sugar at zero duty until October 31, ahead of peak festival demand. Concurrently, agricultural trade data revealed that India’s import of fruits and vegetables from the United States doubled in value over the past decade to $1.45 billion, with the US remaining India’s top supplier in this category. On the bilateral trade front, Indian exports to Australia surged by 200% over the last five years under the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), significantly outperforming growth rates with other global partners. Building on zero-tariff access for Indian goods, both nations are actively negotiating a broader Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) to expand coverage into services, the digital economy, and labor mobility.
