US Sanctions on Iran Endanger Indian Basmati Rice Exports and Maritime Freight

Published

The escalation of US economic sanctions against Iran under “Operation Economic Outcast” threatens to severely disrupt India’s multi-million dollar basmati rice export market. India exports nearly 1 million tonnes of basmati rice to Iran annually, but shipments have already dropped significantly due to transit issues around the Strait of Hormuz and potential payment processing freezes by UAE-based intermediaries. The US Department of State has also issued direct secondary sanctions against four Indian-based firms accused of facilitating Iranian petrochemical shipments, raising regulatory and financial compliance risks for domestic businesses. Trade experts warn that rerouting vessels around the Cape of Good Hope has already driven up transit times and freight costs across the region. Despite these geopolitical headwinds, global crude oil prices have remained relatively stable due to reduced traffic and pre-existing supply adjustments in West Asia.
