India Investment Overhaul, Record Nhava Sheva Port Growth, and Mangaluru Harbour Dredging

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced plans to further streamline India’s investment regime by inviting industry recommendations to simplify KYC processes, establish mutual recognition agreements, and raise approval thresholds for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) proposals. To accelerate capital inflows, the government is considering elevating the ceiling for FDI proposals requiring Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approval from ₹5,000 crore to ₹15,000 crore, while expanding Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes and negotiating key trade pacts across 12 CPTPP-bloc nations, Peru, and Mercosur. On the maritime trade front, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA/Nhava Sheva) in Mumbai emerged as the fastest-growing container port among the world’s top 30 in the first half of 2026, leaping from 28th to 21st position in Alphaliner’s global rankings. Driven by a 14% year-on-year throughput increase to 4.4 million TEUs, JNPA’s rapid surge was fueled by strong domestic export-import demand, expanded terminal capacity, and major cargo diversions from conflict-stricken West Asia. Meanwhile, Karnataka’s Port Department has resubmitted a revised ₹35.50 crore proposal under the Sagarmala project to secure urgent central approval for capital dredging at Mangaluru Fisheries Harbour. The project aims to deepen the channel depth from 4 meters to 7 meters to enable smooth navigation for larger trawlers and cargo vessels, overcoming previous administrative delisting, tender rule modifications, and CRZ environmental clearance delays.
