India-EU FTA Unlocks Massive Automotive Quotas while Kamarajar Port Prepares for $1,200 Cr Public Listing

Published

Under the draft text of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), Indian automakers like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra are set to gain unprecedented market access to Europe with an initial annual quota of 250,000 passenger vehicles at a reduced 8% duty, scaling up to 400,000 units by Year 10 with zero tariffs by Year 5. In return, European luxury carmakers like Mercedes-Benz and BMW gain concessional import access for up to 100,000 vehicles annually in India, though mass-market cars below €15,000 remain protected to safeguard local manufacturers. Beyond the auto trade deal, Chennai-based Kamarajar Port Ltd, India’s first corporate major port, has initiated the appointment of investment bankers for a landmark ₹1,200 crore Initial Public Offering (IPO). Wholly owned by the Chennai Port Authority, Kamarajar operates primarily under a landlord model handling thermal coal, petroleum, and automobiles, and a successful public issue will make it the country’s only listed state-backed major port entity by 2027.
