Government Clamps Down on Hospital Consumables Pricing While Exporters Seek Tariff Protection

Published

The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers requested an urgent analysis from the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) following a report by the Maharashtra FDA exposing extreme markups on hospital consumables. Surveys revealed price markups exceeding 2,800% between wholesale procurement costs and printed Maximum Retail Prices (MRPs) on everyday items like IV sets, syringes, and catheters, reopening official discussions on implementing Trade Margin Rationalisation (TMR) across non-scheduled medical devices. Simultaneously, the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) voiced strong concern over the US Russia Sanctions Bill, cautioning that the threat of 100% secondary tariffs might be leveraged to force India into signing a one-sided Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). In maritime defence and heavy industry, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) finalized plans to invest ₹27,000 crore to build a mega greenfield shipbuilding cluster at Dighi Port in Raigad, Maharashtra, projecting the creation of over 90,000 jobs. Meanwhile, the Union Government conducted a national review to increase the utilization of recycled steel sourced from domestic ship-breaking yards.
