A detailed evaluation of India’s trade performance reveals that August’s 26.1% merchandise export growth was broad-based, driven by electronics (up 89.8%), petroleum, and engineering goods. Imports also rose by 18.2% during April-August, but key analysis shows this was heavily driven by industrial machinery, optical tools, and electronic components, indicating capital creation rather than unproductive consumption. India’s strategy of signing preferential trade agreements is yielding clear results, with Q1 FY27 exports to Singapore and Sri Lanka more than doubling, and shipments to ASEAN jumping over 60%. Under the India-UAE CEPA alone, over 4.45 lakh Certificates of Origin have been issued, enabling Indian exporters to expand into thousands of new product categories. However, key sectors ranging from IT services ($120 billion export market to the US) to pharmaceuticals, engineering, and defense supply chains remain deeply anxious about potential tariff enforcement. As bilateral trade stands at a critical juncture, industry leaders stress that long-term resilience will depend on market diversification, competitive manufacturing, and strong diplomatic engagement.
