Bilateral Free Trade Milestones and Expanded West Asian Shipping Connectivity

Published

India is rapidly strengthening its international trade footprint through major bilateral trade agreements and new maritime routes. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the historic India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement will officially come into effect on October 20, 2026. The agreement grants 100 percent duty-free market access to Indian exports while securing a $20 billion investment commitment from New Zealand over 15 years. Simultaneously, India is fast-tracking trade negotiations with other key economies: the fifth round of India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) talks begins on October 5, while trade agreements with the European Union and Chile are moving closer to implementation. Complementing this trade push, Cochin Port has launched the new fortnightly MGR IFR shipping service directly linking Southern India to major West Asian commercial hubs in the UAE, Oman, and Yemen. Operated by DP World, this direct service provides enhanced supply chain resilience for regional exporters and builds on Cochin’s record cargo handling growth.
