According to a market analysis by trade group BIMCO, the global container shipping industry faces severe overcapacity as ship supply is projected to grow significantly faster than cargo demand through 2027. Despite current vessel absorption from ongoing Cape of Good Hope rerouting, Red Sea disruptions, and Asian port congestion, a massive newbuilding orderbook exceeding 14 million TEU (with orderbook-to-fleet ratios topping 45%) is set to deliver millions of TEU in fresh capacity. Analysts warn that once geopolitical chokepoint disruptions ease and vessels return to shorter trade routes like the Suez Canal, effective vessel supply will surge dramatically, leaving carriers vulnerable to plunging spot freight rates and low vessel utilization unless aggressive capacity management, slow steaming, and vessel recycling are enforced.
