Mumbai Port Executes Complex Ro-Ro Handling for 1,452-Ton Over-Dimensional Cargo

Published

Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) successfully executed a specialized Roll-Off (Ro-Ro) handling operation to unload three heavy over-dimensional cargo (ODC) packages with a combined weight of 1,452 metric tonnes (MT). Shipped via barge from Dahej, the massive packages could not be handled using standard quay crane methods due to their extreme weight, length, and structural complexity. To ensure structural safety and avoid balance issues, port operators deployed the specialized barge roll-off technique inside the port’s sheltered lock gate basin. The calm water conditions within the lock gate were essential for keeping the barge perfectly level with the quay deck during the heavy vehicle rolling process. This successful high-precision operation highlights Mumbai Port’s advanced engineering readiness and operational reliability for handling critical, large-scale industrial project freight.
