Kerala Port Ecosystem Transformation and Strategic Maritime Sector Reforms

Published

The Kerala government launched Mission Samudra, a ₹400-crore five-year initiative aimed at developing an integrated port-led logistics ecosystem along its 600-km coastline to leverage the transshipment capabilities of the Vizhinjam International Seaport. Running through 2026-31, the project integrates multimodal transport corridors, warehousing hubs, and coastal shipping to convert port infrastructure into broader economic opportunities. In a parallel development for traditional coastal livelihoods, the Fisheries Department granted in-principle approval for a dedicated fishing harbour at Vizhinjam, featuring a 235-metre breakwater and a 500-metre fishery berth to coexist alongside international terminal operations. On the trade policy front, a comprehensive review of the India-EFTA deal revealed a $202 million surge in Swiss investment in India alongside notable export growth in Indian automobiles and heavy machinery.
