India’s rice exports are projected to decline by 4% to 24 million tonnes in the 2026-27 crop year due to lower domestic production of 147 million tonnes triggered by El Niño weather disruptions, according to a USDA market analysis report. Lower exportable surpluses, high ocean freight rates from West Asian conflicts, and domestic price stabilization measures are expected to temper overall shipment volumes despite steady global demand. Supporting long-term maritime growth, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized that India’s 11,098 km coastline and 25.8 lakh crore projected investments under the Blue Economy framework will drive sustainable ocean resources, deep-sea exploration, and marine biotechnology for Viksit Bharat 2047. Operational capabilities were highlighted as Paradip Port’s Mechanised Coal Handling Plant established a new record by loading 1,40,022 metric tonnes of coal onto two vessels in a single day. Additionally, Canada is sending a 300-member trade delegation led by Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu to India to advance negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, targeting more than double bilateral trade to CAD 70 billion by 2030.
