UK-India Deal Projects Bilateral Expansion as Indian Automakers Establish Sourcing Operations in China

Published

UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds stated that the UK-India trade agreement could generate an additional £25 billion in annual trade over the long term, supported by tariff reductions across agriculture, jewellery, and leather sectors. Highlighting commercial alignment, the UK-Maharashtra Growth Partnership was signed with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to facilitate state-level opportunities in fintech and infrastructure. Concurrently, Indian auto and component firms like Ather Energy, Ceat, and Lumax Auto Technologies are setting up local sourcing teams and subsidiaries in China as trade barriers and raw material prices escalate. Driven by rising copper and aluminium costs and China’s expanding 36% share in India’s auto component imports, firms are securing direct access to key critical inputs. Furthermore, stringent Chinese export licensing controls on rare earth elements and magnets have heightened supply chain risks, prompting companies like Ather Energy to establish Hong Kong subsidiaries to ensure component supply resilience.
