BRICS Summit Prioritizes Small Businesses and Debates High-Stakes Global Grain Exchange

Published

The New Delhi Declaration adopted at the 18th BRICS Summit placed significant emphasis on elevating micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) within global value chains by tackling affordable finance bottlenecks. Highlights included endorsing the Jaipur Consensus to study an Invoice Discounting Mechanism for MSMEs and celebrating the inaugural BRICS SME Forum in Agra to boost cross-border competitiveness. Simultaneously, member nations reiterated support for a Russian-led proposal to establish a BRICS Grain Exchange, designed to counter the dominant control held by European and US trading firms over 70–90% of global grain trade. Representing 44% of global grain production and over 25% of consumption, the bloc aims to gain greater price-setting power and market stability for the Global South. However, experts caution that major operational hurdles remain, including forex regulations, limited member participation, and resolving complex contract settlement currencies, especially since commodities like rice are excluded from standard global grain definitions.
