British Trade Delegation Unlocks 1 Billion Pound Deals in India as Petroleum Exports Cushion Domestic Oil Import Costs

Published

A high-profile British business delegation led by UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds arrived in India under the “Great North Mission,” unlocking trade deals worth over £1 billion following the implementation of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The deals include a £50 million investment from Meta for UK AI research and plans by Menzies Aviation to generate over £600 million in revenue by expanding in India. Highlighting macro stability, the World Bank upgraded India’s FY27 GDP growth forecast to 7.1% from 6.6%, citing strong Q1 performance, robust urban-rural consumption, and resilient manufacturing that offset weaker agricultural output. In energy dynamics, India’s petroleum product exports generated $4.77 billion during June–August 2026, successfully covering 26–30% of the country’s monthly oil and gas import bill amid volatile crude markets and elevated global freight rates. Concurrently, Union Minister Piyush Goyal announced that quota-based tariff concessions under FTAs with the EU and UK will encourage major foreign automakers and consumer electronics firms to establish local manufacturing hubs in India.
