The Central Government has accepted key recommendations from a Parliamentary Committee to strengthen India’s cold chain and post-harvest infrastructure, aiming to reduce food wastage, improve supply chain efficiency, and stabilise prices of perishable commodities. The initiative focuses on expanding modern cold storage facilities, refrigerated transportation, pack houses, and integrated cold-chain networks, while promoting technology-driven solutions for crops such as onions and tomatoes. The committee noted that nearly 5.31% of onions and 8.37% of tomatoes are lost after harvest due to inadequate storage and handling. The government also highlighted improvements in scientific storage, with the proportion of usable onions after storage increasing from 63% in 2024–25 to around 72% in 2025–26. The expanded cold-chain infrastructure is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, improve produce quality and shelf life, enhance farmer incomes, and strengthen India’s food logistics ecosystem.
