A data analysis by Visual Capitalist ranking the world’s busiest container ports highlights Asia’s overwhelming dominance in global maritime logistics, with Chinese ports securing six of the top eight positions worldwide. The Port of Shanghai maintained its position as the world’s busiest container gateway for the 16th consecutive year, processing a record 55.1 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), followed by Singapore (44.7M TEUs) and Ningbo-Zhoushan (43.9M TEUs). Driven by robust manufacturing exports, massive automated infrastructure investments, and strategic Belt and Road Initiative trade corridors, China accounts for over 40% of global container throughput. Meanwhile, major Western gateways lag significantly behind their Asian counterparts, with Europe’s busiest port, Rotterdam, ranking outside the top ten, and North America’s primary gateway, the Port of Los Angeles, holding 16th place globally, underscoring the structural concentration of world ocean freight and manufacturing supply chains across Asian maritime hubs.
