China’s overall exports recorded a 5.1% growth in April 2025, surpassing market expectations. However, exports to the United States plunged by more than 20% amid ongoing tariff-related tensions and trade restrictions imposed by both nations.
Despite the dip in US-bound shipments, Chinese exporters have witnessed a resurgence in trade with Southeast Asian countries, which helped offset the decline. Additionally, US retailers have resumed securing shipments from China after initial cancellations, reflecting cautious optimism as trade talks continue.
The evolving trade dynamics indicate that while the US-China tariff battle continues, China’s diversified export strategy and global supply chain resilience are mitigating adverse impacts. However, experts predict that export growth might slow down later this year as tariff pressures persist.
