The Federation of Indian Coir Exporters Associations (FICEA) has urged the government to intervene and provide relief to the coir industry, which is facing a major crisis due to the new 50% U.S. tariffs. The cancellation and suspension of orders from American buyers are expected to lead to large-scale layoffs and financial distress for the industry.
FICEA Chairman Roby Francis called the situation a “national emergency” and highlighted that the industry’s already low profit margins cannot absorb the steep tariff. The association has requested government support through export subsidies, better access to working capital, and diplomatic intervention to find a solution with the U.S..
