The Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR) is set to launch a new double-stack container train service, aiming to enhance efficiency and reduce transportation costs. This initiative will see double-stacked containers travelling between Dadri in Uttar Pradesh and Varnama in Gujarat.
The Indian Railways infrastructure currently limits container trains to single-stack configurations on certain stretches. To address this limitation, CONCOR has devised a strategic plan. Single-stacked containers will be transported on the Indian Railway line from Varnama to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). Then, double-stacked containers will be utilised for the leg from JNPT to Dadri, maximizing capacity and efficiency on this critical route.
This move by CONCOR is expected to have a significant impact on the supply chain. By enabling the transportation of 180 containers per train compared to the usual 90 in a single-stack configuration, CONCOR can potentially reduce transportation costs and expedite cargo movement. This could benefit various stakeholders, including businesses, manufacturers, and consumers.
