Energy Self-Reliance – India to Accelerate Coal Gasification to Curb Imports

Published

To reduce its heavy dependence on imported energy, the Indian government is fast-tracking its coal gasification mission. The strategy focuses on converting domestic coal into synthetic gas, which can be used as a cleaner fuel for industries and as a feedstock for chemicals. By incentivizing private players and public sector undertakings (PSUs), the government aims to achieve 100 million tonnes of coal gasification by 2030. This initiative is seen as a critical move to insulate the Indian economy from volatile global gas prices and to ensure long-term energy security amidst rising international geopolitical tensions.
