Legal experts have raised serious concerns regarding the draft Intellectual Property (IP) chapter of the proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement. The omission of the WIPO Copyright Treaty (WCT) from the National Treatment clause could force amendments to India’s Copyright Act of 1957, threatening statutory exceptions for students, researchers, and public archives. Under strict anti-circumvention rules, security researchers testing software or students bypassing digital locks could face civil and criminal liabilities. Additionally, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) could lose safe harbor protections for routine temporary data caching. Parallelly, due to rising security threats in West Asian sea lanes, India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is developing the ‘Seafarers’ Emergency Support Network’. Upgrading the existing eNavik tracking module, this system will transition from vessel-based tracking to real-time, person-level tracking for over 3.19 lakh Indian maritime professionals worldwide. This 24/7 framework aims to ensure rapid emergency response during geopolitical conflicts, piracy attacks, or vessel abandonments.
