Free Trade Agreement Bilateral Commerce Edible Oil Logistics Infrastructure Maritime Connectivity Hub

The proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is set to inject fresh momentum into Germany-India bilateral trade, creating substantial expansion opportunities for nearly 2,000 German companies currently operating in India beyond traditional clusters like Pune and Bengaluru. Parallelly, India’s edible oil imports during the first seven months of the 2025-26 oil year jumped 13.35% to 92.17 lakh tonnes, driven heavily by an increase in crude soybean oil inflows in May as its narrowing price premium over palm oil significantly enhanced its market competitiveness. On infrastructure development, the VO Chidambaranar (VOC) Port Authority in Thoothukudi has finalized a massive ₹5,720-crore expansion project to deepen its harbour basin and approach channel to a 15.2-meter draught. This critical upgrade will eliminate dependence on nearby transshipment hubs like Colombo by directly accommodating large mainline Panamax vessels and ultra-large container ships up to 14,000 TEUs.
