The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a comprehensive advisory directing Food Business Operators (FBOs) and logistics partners across the supply chain to maintain strict temperature-controlled storage, hygienic transport conditions, and robust consignment traceability for highly perishable commodities such as meat, fish, paneer, and khoa. Issued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the regulatory directive mandates that prescribed temperature thresholds must be maintained without interruption from procurement and sourcing through transit to final consumer delivery, explicitly classifying temperature abuse as non-compliance under Schedule 4 sanitary requirements. Furthermore, FSSAI has prohibited non-food-grade packaging materials, such as gunny bags, requiring food-grade secondary packaging and clean, covered transport vehicles to prevent microbial contamination, while instructing state food safety commissioners, Indian Railways, and regional directors to conduct rigorous inspections with strict enforcement penalties, including cargo seizure and destruction for non-compliant operators.
