In a major policy relief for domestic refiners, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) revised its import guidelines for duty-free raw sugar under the tariff-rate quota. Removing the rigid October 31 processing deadline, the government now allows refiners two full months from the filing of their customs declaration to process raw sugar into refined white sugar for domestic sale. This relaxation accounts for long shipping timelines from supply hubs like Brazil and has already helped cool ex-mill sugar prices down to 55 per kg from peak levels. Concurrently, the Ministry of Agriculture has issued a draft notification proposing a complete ban on the manufacture, import, sale, and use of carbosulfan. The decision follows an expert panel report highlighting severe toxic effects of the insecticide on human and animal health, combined with the lack of an effective antidote.
