India and the United Kingdom have officially finalized the timeline for their landmark Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), set to enter into force on July 15, 2026. This follows a high-stakes breakthrough at the G7 Summit where Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer resolved a dispute regarding steel tariffs. The UK agreed to lift the duty-free quota for Indian steel to 85%. In return, India will deeply slash import duties on British Scotch whisky (dropping from 150% to 40%), automotive parts, and luxury cosmetics. Concurrently, Indian textiles, marine products, and core engineering items will gain entirely tax-free access to the UK market. Additionally, the parallel implementation of the Double Contribution Convention (DCC) will expand social security home-system exemptions from 3 to 5 years, directly benefiting over 75,000 highly skilled Indian professionals working in the UK.
