India-EU FTA Nears Final Approval as BRICS Leaders Push for Economic Realignment

Published

The European Commission has officially submitted proposals to the European Council to sign and conclude the historic Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India, marking a monumental step toward implementing what is widely considered the largest trade deal concluded by either party. The landmark deal promises to eliminate or reduce tariffs on 96% of EU goods exported to India, saving European exporters around €4 billion annually and deepening access to a combined market representing nearly 2 billion people and a quarter of global GDP. Concurrently, global economic leadership took center stage at the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, where Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted that BRICS countries now account for 40% of global GDP and over half of recent economic growth, surpassing the G7’s 29% share. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi championed the expansion of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) as a global solution for scale-level financial inclusion while stressing the necessity of safe sea lanes for global trade. Meanwhile, regional developments saw Adani Gangavaram Port win the 25th Environment Sustainability Award 2026, and India’s basmati export sector noted a decisive consumer shift toward premium, traceable, and heritage-backed rice varieties.
