India is planning a concerted effort to boost its textile exports by launching dedicated outreach programs in 40 countries, including key markets in the UK, Japan, South Korea, and the EU. The move is in direct response to the new 50% U.S. tariff. These 40 countries, while India already exports to over 220 nations, are considered crucial for diversification. The official noted that the textile and apparel import market in 2024 was valued at $800.77 billion, with these 40 countries representing over $590 billion of that total.
To achieve this goal, Export Promotion Councils will take a lead role in market mapping, identifying high-demand products, and linking specialized production clusters to opportunities in these countries. The councils will also guide exporters on how to use Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and meet international sustainability standards.
