During a bilateral visit to Amman, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed doubling India-Jordan trade to $5 billion over the next five years. Addressing the India-Jordan Business Forum alongside King Abdullah II, Modi highlighted opportunities for collaboration in digital public infrastructure, IT, and agri-tech. India is currently Jordan’s third-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade valued at $2.88 billion in 2023-24.
Several areas of mutual cooperation were identified:
- Pharmaceuticals: Indian companies were urged to manufacture medicines and medical devices in Jordan to serve as a hub for West Asia and Africa.
- Digital Systems: Efforts are underway to integrate Jordan’s payment systems with India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
- Green Initiatives: Collaboration in renewable energy, desalination, and green financing was suggested to unlock Jordan’s potential.
King Abdullah II emphasized that Jordan’s free trade agreements combined with India’s economic power could create a vital economic corridor between South Asia and West Asia. To further strengthen ties, an MoU was signed to encourage investment and facilitate trade between New Delhi and Amman. Prime Minister Modi also invited Jordanian companies to partner with India’s strong manufacturing base and 1.4 billion consumer market
