US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal are holding critical talks in New Delhi to close the open loops of the first phase of an interim Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). Minister Goyal emphasized that India cannot finalize the FTA until it secures a distinct competitive tariff advantage over rival exporting nations like ASEAN countries. Under the current design, India intends to reduce or eliminate tariffs on all US industrial goods and buy $500 billion worth of US energy, aircraft parts, tech products, and coking coal over five years. Meanwhile, both nations are adjusting terms after a US Supreme Court ruling overturned sweeping reciprocal duties, replacing them with a temporary 10% tariff expiring on July 24.
