Former foreign secretary and Rajya Sabha MP, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, expressed optimism that India will be able to conclude a “satisfactory mutually beneficial” free trade agreement (FTA) with the U.S. despite the new 50% tariffs. He stated that the successful conclusion of this FTA would pave the way for a visit from President Trump to India. Shringla noted that India is actively working to mitigate the impact of the tariffs by seeking alternative markets.
He highlighted India’s existing free trade agreements with Australia, the UAE, and the UK, and mentioned that the country is close to finalizing a trade deal with the European Union. These agreements, he said, would allow India to access different markets and divert some of its exports. Shringla also emphasized the comprehensive nature of the India-U.S. relationship, built on shared values and principles, which he believes will help the two nations navigate any challenges.
