India’s port sector is shifting toward container-driven expansion, with private port operators like Adani Ports and JSW Infrastructure projected to grow at two to three times the industry rate of 4–5%, supported by the National Monetisation Pipeline 2.0 and the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. Major ports handled 915 million metric tonnes in FY26, a 7% year-on-year increase driven by petroleum and container traffic, while non-major ports grew by 1.4%. To support industrial activity, a 17-member government panel is preparing recommendations to modernize 276 operational SEZs and harmonize export promotion schemes. On the international front, trade diversification strategies helped India achieve a 16.09% year-on-year increase in total exports to $88.91 billion during April–May FY27. Shipments to ASEAN surged by 66.9% to $10.5 billion, and exports to Africa jumped by 53.1% to $9.6 billion, demonstrating that markets outside North America and Europe now account for over half of India’s total merchandise exports.
