India is emerging as a global maritime innovator, recently hosting the third council meeting of the International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA) in Mumbai. The high-level event brought together delegates from over 30 countries, reflecting international confidence in India’s maritime leadership. As an active council member, India contributes significantly to global standard-setting and safe navigation practices.
During the Mumbai sessions, the IALA committees deliberated on advancements in vessel traffic services, digital technologies, and engineering sustainability. Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted that India’s maritime domain, which includes 11,000 km of coastline and over 200 ports, is a powerhouse for connectivity and trade. The nation’s “Blue Economy” aspirations rely heavily on these modernized marine aids to navigation.
A major digital initiative launched during the meeting was the Digital Ticketing Portal for Lighthouse Tourism. This portal aims to enhance transparency and visitor convenience across 75 lighthouse destinations nationwide. By advancing both digital and sustainable solutions, India continues to strengthen its role in navigation safety and international maritime cooperation.
